We aim to breed from our queens about once every 9-12 months, so that they have plenty of time to build up their  strength and have an enjoyable life.

Day 7 - the escape committee small

All our cats and kittens are raised and kept in a home environment, with the kittens born in a bedroom with at least one of us in attendance and sleeping in with each litter for the first few weeks of their lives. They have my attention all day and every day, while being seen and handled by the other members of the family as they grow to help give them a good, confident and well socialised beginning in life.

We take the time to expose them to all the sights and sounds of the house so they should be confident and content around vacuum cleaners and the like.  Additionally we expose them to the sound of dogs barking and fireworks going off so that these sounds will also cause them little or no worry.  What a kitten is exposed to in the first 6-8 weeks of life forms much of their view of the world. Kittens raised with exposure to a large variety of stimuli and experiencing a warm and loving family environment are shown to be more social and happy cats all their lives. We therefore aim to start all our kittens out right, as we wish them to have wonderful lives with their new families!

We always reserve the right to keep or reserve any kitten for breeding as the Abyssinian gene pool needs to improve and expand where possible.

All kittens come to their new owners with a 5-generation pedigree, kitten care notes, vaccination certificates and health record, short term free pet insurance cover from Petplan, a little something from Royal Canin, as well as being a well socialised, house-trained, healthy and used to children. If ever a kitten are unwell, it will be kept here until our Vet is happy that it is fully fit and healthy.

I ask that prospective owners come and visit so they can meet the kittens before collecting them, if at is at all possible. To ensure that the kittens have a basic level of immunisation and therefore some safety from illness before they are exposed to new people, this is preferably after they’ve had their first shots at about 8 weeks old.  This way I know who their new families will be and you can see them and meet us and all our cats, in doing this we aim to prevent unhappy mistakes and let their new families get to know them a little bit before taking them home a few weeks later.

Kittens are inoculated against cat flu (Viral Rhinotracheitis – (FVR) and Calici virus (FCV)), Feline Panleukopenia – (FPV) also known as feline infectious enteritis (FIE), and FeLV (Feline leukemia virus); they may leave no earlier than 1 week after their final vaccination, so go at about 13-14 weeks of age. They are also treated against worms. I am also happy to arrange for the kittens to be micro-chipped before they leave here, and advise that you do so for their safety and your peace of mind.

A preference is given to homes that will not let the cats out, as I do not want to ever have one of our cats killed by a car (I lost my first cat to a car accident as a young child and have never forgotten the hurt it caused).   Abyssinian cats are far too friendly and curious for their own good at times, so keeping them as an indoor cat is for the best - cats who have never know the outdoors do not miss it.  Though it’s great for them to have a secure run if you have the space for one, as it lets them have more exercise. Our cats here love their run and spend time in it throughout the year as long as it’s not raining! Though many Abyssinians are happy to learn to walk in a harness and lead and can therefore be kept in almost any sized house or apartment.

Other than finding a good local Vet, the main thing to think about is kitten proofing your house.  Making sure there are no poisonous plants your kitten/cat can get to.  Keeping common household products that are hazardous to kitten or cat out of reach or better yet in a cupboard or container they can’t access is advisable. This includes string and rubber bands (a choking hazard or worse if swallowed), along with cleaning and laundry products that contain phenols sometimes called phenolics. Some phenols are germicidal and are used in formulating disinfectants, others possess estrogenic or compounds that cause endocrine disrupting activity, one simple way to check for them is if the product in question becomes cloudy in water. If it does it’s highly likely to contain them and be unsafe for your kitten/cat(s). Other things to look out for are washing machines and tumble dryers (with their doors left open), power cords (that might be chewed), unsuitable food left lying around, sharp knives or tools left out on work tops and so on.

(A leaflet on kitten and cat safety is part of our kitten care package that is given out to all our kittens new families when they first visit us.  This is to enable them to get ready for their new feline family member)

At Lovelynx we ask that all our new kitten owners sign an agreement so that they clearly understand the privileges and requirements of ownership, or as we like to think of it adding a feline family member!

Please note kittens sold as pets will be registered as Non-Active, which means they cannot legally be used for breeding.  To this end the new owners will be asked to sign an agreement to neuter/spay the kitten by 6 months of age.

Only we, the breeder may apply to transfer the cat to the active register for breeding purposes, no kitten born to a cat on the non-active register can be registered as a pedigree cat regardless of parentage.

If you are considering showing and/or breeding please tell us this when you enquire, this way we can help you to pick a suitable kitten - although this may include having to wait for the right kitten to be born.

Only by breeding carefully from top quality cats will we keep the breed standard and ensure that our cats are healthy and happy.
