Below is a list that will no doubt grow over time of the cat books I have personally read and found the most useful. With so many on the market and more appearing all the time, I have limited this list to books that are outstanding in their quality and deserve their bit of shelf space in any cat owners home.

The Book of the Cat - ISBN 0-330-26153-3

Written and edited by Michael Wright and Sally Walters, published Pan Books. Truly book worth reading and keeping for future reference, it deals with all aspects of all breeds of cat with plenty of good photographs and illustrations. Although this book has been out of print for years you can often locate a second-hand copy on Amazon or via E-Bay at a reasonable price.

Your Cat, Simple New Secrets to a Longer, Stronger Life - ISBN 0-312-35801-6

Written Elizabeth Hodgkins D.M.V, an American vet, in easy to understand language though going into an amazing level of detail in places, with case her own studies that back up her findings regarding feline nutrition and its link to many illnesses and chronic conditions. It just makes so much sense when you think about it, well worth adding to your collection of reference books and certainly worth at least one read cover to cover. An essential for anyone with a diabetic cat!

Catwatching (The Essential Guide to Cat Behaviour) - ISBN 009188311-3

By Desmond Morris, published by Ebury Press. This book basically a collection of observations and deductions about feline behaviour.  An excellent starting point on your road to understanding your cat(s) that much better.

The Cat Whisperer - ISBN 978-1-90403-474-2

By Claire Bassant (Chief Executive of the Feline Advisory Bureau), published by John Blake.  This book gives you a real insight as to how and why cats behave a certain way and shows you how you can use this information to forge a better relationship with your cat(s), as well as helping you get to the bottom of problems your cat might have, understand them and then help you to solve them.  All in all a great book that helps you see the World from a feline perspective.

What’s Up with My Cat? - ISBN 0-7513-33-96-4

By Dr. Bruce Fogle in association with the RSPCA, published by Dorling Kindersley. A good and easy to use visual guide to Symptoms and First Aid.

For those wanting a deeper understanding of cat care and treatment I’d suggest the following:

Cat Owner's Home Veterinary Handbook - ISBN 0-87605-814-4

By Delbert G. Carlson, published by Howell Book House Inc. Available in the UK both new and second-hand via Amazon and possibly on E-Bay too.

For a light-hearted, but very well researched and explained look at some aspects of feline genetics:

Cats are not Peas: A Calico History of Genetics - ISBN 1568813201

By Laura L. Gould, published by A K Peters. This is the story of how she found out all about her rare male calico cat George, while leaps and bounds have been made in the study of genetics since George’s day, this well written book is certainly a great place to start from still if you are interested in genetics, including lots about the history of the subject along the way. A book that’s as enjoyable to read as it is informative!  Available in the UK as a second edition with extra text that brings it pretty much right up to date - Amazon stock it, and some bookshops might be able to order it in for you.
